95 POINTS - HALLIDAY WINE COMPANION

'The colour is so-so, but not so the wine. It's energising, buoyed by refreshing acidity as much as juicy, tangy fruit. Neatly set into a medium-bodied palate with an array of cherries, raspberries and woodsy spices, with some savoury touches, it's neatly composed and satisfying. Best in youth, but it will hang around for a few years yet.' - Jane Faulkner

94 POINTS - THE WINE FRONT

'Selected blocks of fruit from a vineyard in Yarra Glen. Cherry and strawberry compote. The aromas remind me of a dried, smoked fruit concoction made for Christmas in Poland, a compote. If I may add a personal touch here. It’s a seductive combination of sweet, salty and umami. Dried mushrooms, game meat, a bouquet of stewed spices and herbs. Touch of dusty potpourri represents the tannin feel and the prevailing umami flavour follows the acidity line. It’s light but with a pleasant spicy pinch. Bright red fruits shape this wine, which is otherwise very savoury. Mouthwatering and makes me think of food.'

TASTING

SEASON

Highbow Hill Vineyard is 40 hectares planted on rolling hills just north of Yarra Glen township. The soils are sandy loam over clay and gravel over Yarra Valley mudstone. Most of the vines were planted in 1998. Handpicked Wines has invested heavily in the property, planting new blocks in 2015, 2016 and 2018, erecting new fencing to protect the fruit from kangaroos and other wildlife and generally upgrading viticultural practices to realise the best potential of this exceptional site.

WINEMAKING

2019 was a warm season overall and the harvest was early. Cool weather and regular rain made a slow start to the season, setting up good ground moisture and vine health. Fruit reached full ripeness easily and timing of picking was paramount for balancing natural acidity. The fruit was handpicked and sorted before vinification in open fermenters with hand plunging. The wine was matured for 11 months in a mix of new and seasoned French oak barrels from a selection of Burgundian coopers.
