Our second Tamar Valley vineyard is one of few on the eastern bank of the Tamar River. Handpicked was pleased to purchase Native Point Vineyard from Sheena and Tim High, first-class growers from whom we had purchased grapes over many years. We had always loved the fruit, admired the site and appreciated Tim and Sheena’s diligence and management, so we were proud to accept the baton from them in 2019.
Its north-westerly aspect and position in Swan Bay, about 50km inland from Bass Strait, make Native Point one of the warmer sites in Tasmania and it has the advantage of good rainfall and irrigation dams.
There are a mix of Pinot Noir clones planted on slopes with good drainage, as well as Riesling and Pinot Gris vines from which our first Tasmanian wines of those varieties will be made in 2020. With five hectares under vine and plans to double that area beginning in spring 2020, the property also sustains a small herd of Black Angus cattle for beef. New planting will include Pinot Noir and Gamay.
