ABOUT

Handpicked Wines

Our philosophy is 'travel with wine' and it underpins everything we do - including our winemaker's busy travel schedule.

Purpose

We make wine with minimal intervention from our sustainably managed vineyards. Diversity is important; we love sharing a world of wine with people from all different cultures and backgrounds. >

Fostering Positive Change

Protecting our local environment

Protecting our environment begins in the vineyards. We are replacing synthetic sprays and chemicals, encouraging flora and fauna biodiversity and managing waste and water. By doing this it makes our vineyard healthier, stronger and cleaner. It also means our vineyard staff are breathing in a safer environment. Every day we look to improve our processes.

PETER DILLON

DIRECTOR OF WINEMAKING

Pete spends his days amongst the Handpicked vines and winery. His job is a little more unusual when compared with other Australian winemakers who mostly work within one region.

Based in Mornington Peninsula, Pete is constantly traveling across Handpicked regions throughout Australia and beyond. Some weeks he will cover 3-4 regions in 5 days and needless to say, it’s his passion for high quality winemaking and travel that pushed him into this unconventional and challenging role.

Prior to Mornington, Pete was based in Western Australia, where he spent years working as a winemaker with Accolade Wines and Larry Cherubino. Pete has over 20 years’ industry experience, and is a qualified wine judge. He brings a wealth of technical skill, management experience and passion to the Handpicked team.

We don’t know where he found the time, but Pete was also one of 12 wine industry specialists across Australia to be selected to take part in the prestigious 2016 Len Evans Tutorial.

Pete is passionate about making site-specific wines, and is currently building a new sustainable winery in Yarra Valley. In his (very limited) spare time, you can find him hanging out with his kids, fly fishing, or drinking Burgundy with his winemaker wife, Imogen. Although winemaker’s hate to pick favourites, Pete gets pretty excited about making Pinot Noir.

JONATHON MATTICK

WINEMAKER

“I believe in a minimal intervention approach to winemaking. It is the winemaker’s job to produce wines with an enduring sense of place, something Handpicked truly believes in. Wine is made in the vineyard, if you can get that right everything else will follow from there.”

Jonathon is based out of Handpicked’s flagship Capella Vineyard in the Mornington Peninsula. Jonathon has a background in cooler climate regions with a formal education in Bachelor of Science (Wine Science of course!) from Charles Sturt University. Jonathon looks after the Capella winery but also overseeing the success of our award winning wines across all the fine wine regions of Australia. When he’s not making wine, Jonathon can be found hanging out with his winery dog, Berlin.

VINEYARD TEAM

VITICULTURISTS AND EXPERTS

Handpicked employs a team of experienced winemakers, viticulturists and wine lovers. Making wines across the world means our winemakers are constantly busy travelling to ensure we produce the highest quality wines from each and every region. You can find our team throughout our Handpicked vineyards pruning vines, mowing the grass, fermenting grapes or having a yarn about fishing, food and footy (AFL only - in Victoria!).

Karl Roberts (pictured) is Vineyard Manager at Capella Vineyard, working alongside the winemakers and Andrew Butler, our Senior Viticulturist.

Our Vineyards

HANDPICKED 'WOMBAT CREEK'

The Handpicked Wombat Creek property is located in Yarra Valley, and is in fact the highest altitude vineyard in the valley. Surrounded by mountain ash trees and rolling hills, this is one of Handpicked's premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay sites.

The vineyard is carefully managed by senior viticulturist Andrew Butler, who looks after 16ha's of vines, planted on north and west-facing hills near Gladysdale in the outer reaches of the Upper Yarra Valley. Soils are free-draining volcanic loams. Read more about our vineyards.
