2017 Highbow Hill Releases

2017 Highbow Hill Releases

The team at Handpicked were pretty stoked to receive gold medal scores for several of our wines in the 2021 Halliday Wine Companion, including the two single vineyard wines from Highbow Hill Vineyard:

What excites us most about this wine is the growth and development of this incredible vineyard. It really showcases the sub-regional characters of Yarra Glen. Over the past two years our small but hardworking viticultural team have put countless hours into improving the biodiversity, introducing organic mulching and bringing in sheep for natural fertilisation and mowing! From a winemaking point of view it’s also been incredibly hands on!

Picture yourself on Highbow Hill looking south over healthy vines and wooded hills to Yarra Glen and Mount Dandenong. And for those who like a bit more detail, here's a few ways in which our team at Highbow has been caring for this special site:

  • Cover crops between rows - improve soil structure; increase organic matter, nutrients and biodiversity; attract beneficial insects; hay for mulch
  • Mechanical weeding, mowing, compost, straw mulch - reduce herbicide use, increase organic matter and biodiversity, conserve water.
  • Solar pump for irrigation
  • Increased water efficiency - improved water catchment, soil moisture probes, more targeted irrigation, use of compost and straw mulch.
  • Sheep grazing during the off season to reduce mowing and herbicide use and introduce nutrients (sheep poo!).
  • New plantings of drought-resistant and phylloxera-resistant varieties and clones.
  • Extensive soil and landscape mapping and analysis to best manage existing blocks and plan for new plantings.
  • Reworking of older vines to reinvigorate and sustain.
  • Organic fertilisers and stimulants to strengthen vines and stimulate a healthy biosphere in the soil and leaf canopies; compost teas to be introduced this season.

Vineyard Background

Highbow Hill Vineyard is 40 hectares of vines planted on rolling hills just north of Yarra Glen township in the Yarra Valley. The soils are sandy loam over clay and gravel over Yarra Valley mudstone. Most of the vines were planted in 1998 and they are trained on VSP trellis. Handpicked Wines has invested heavily in the property, planting new areas in 2015 and 2016, erecting new fencing to protect the fruit from kangaroos and other wildlife and generally upgrading viticultural practices to realise the best potential of this exceptional site.

2017 Highbow Hill Vineyard Chardonnay - 96 Points

Handpicked and whole-bunch pressed to deliver vibrant citrus and stone fruit flavours, this wine has the added complexity of barrel fermentation and maturation.

"A light ruby, beaming vivid aromas of strawberry, mulch, Asian spice, red and black cherry and sarsaparilla. Loads of flavour. Rich, even, but far from a loosely knit wine. There is an undercarriage of well massaged tannins across grape, stem and oak, corralling it all into a sheath of sapid intensity and full barrelled length. Very good."

2017 Highbow Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir - 95 Points

Using the finest fruit from the select blocks at our vineyard in Yarra Glen, this wine has deep fruit flavours, fine tannin and the silky-smotth palate we expect of Yarra Valley Pinot Noir.

"This is mid-weight and tightly furled, with flinty mineral crunch welded to classy oak, proving the structural enforcement. A workout in the glass reveals some stone fruit and leesy accents, but it is the kinetic energy and palate-staining length suggesting a very bright further for this cuvee."
